Mike Donovan, principal of HTS Texas, one of the largest independent commercial HVAC manufacturers’ representatives in North America, has been recognized as one of Engineering News Record’s Top 20 Under 40 young professionals in the Texas/Louisiana area for his resourcefulness, leadership, commitment to service in local community and contributions to landmark regional projects. “I am passionate about positively contributing to the customers HTS Texas supports, the HVAC industry, and the communities we serve,” said Mike Donovan, principal, HTS Texas. “When I reflect on my career, I am grateful for my family, and the HTS Texas team members and customers who supported me through risks, failures and real successes.”

As principal of HTS Texas, Donovan leads his team to strive for Real Success® and will not accept a complacent status quo that allows the competition to catch up. Due to his market-changing concepts, Donovan has grown the company from $500,000 in sales in 2001 to $60 million in 2010. Further, the company’s success is visible through the substantial projects successfully completed in the past decade under his leadership including:

  • • A City of Houston energy retrofit project where HTS Texas provided 3,300 tons of energy-efficient HVAC equipment to municipal buildings including the Houston Police Department Headquarters and the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts;
  • • The Rice University Bioscience Research Collaborative Laboratory, a 300,000 square foot LEED-Silver certified facility; and
  • • The Texas A&M University Texas Institute for Preclinical Studies, a premier veterinary research institution that HTS Texas provided LEED-certified HVAC equipment to as they closely followed U.S. Food & Drug Administration Good Laboratory Practice regulations.

Donovan is a USGBC LEED Accredited Professional (AP) and an ASHRAE High Performance Building Design Professional. He currently serves as Vice-President of the ASHRAE Houston Chapter and has served on the ASHRAE board of governors for the past seven years and the Houston Chapter of the American Society of Heating Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Engineers for more than 13 years.

He has also been honored as a Houston Business Journal 40 Under 40 recipient, Ernest & Young Entrepreneur of the Year finalist, a Texas A&M University Aggie 100 for heading one of the fastest growing, Aggie-led businesses in the world, and as a McQuay Sales Professional of the Year. Donovan’s commitment to expanding HTS Texas’ business, his regular volunteer outreach at the St. Cecilia Catholic School to help create awareness about autism and his annual financial contributions to the Memorial Hermann Healthcare System, the Parish School in Houston, ASHRAE research, muscular dystrophy, cancer research and other charities make him a prime example of how young entrepreneurs can run a thriving company while staying true to their values.

Also, a Daikin Intelligent Touch Controller provides central monitoring and controls for the building’s VRV equipment and rooftop ventilation units.

From Houston to San Antonio and Austin, Texas to Wichita, Kansas, HTS Texas and DXS have supplied water- and air-cooled chiller systems, air-handling units, fan coil units, VRV, specialty dehumidifying equipment, and other large-scale HVAC systems to provide hotels energy savings with a focus on using noise management control systems for optimal guest experience.

Joel Hill, Daikin product specialist at Direct Expansion Solutions (DXS), addressed a group of HVAC industry professionals on January 23, 2012 in Chicago, IL at the annual AHR Expo. He shared the team’s success in pairing a Daikin VRV system with three Munters dedicated outside air units at a Houston area school that is recognized as one of U.S. News’ best gifted and talented high schools in America.

HTS Texas, one of the largest independent commercial HVAC manufacturers’ representatives in North America, and DXS, a division of HTS Engineering Ltd. that specializes in VRV implementation and design, have a 4-year history of helping every client team reach their project goals.

“ASHRAE is an amazing resource for HVAC professionals and I always consider it an honor to share best practices on how HTS/DXS helps its customers and partners achieve real success – where everyone involved wins,” said Hill.

Presentation attendees not only walked away with a comprehensive overview of the team’s vast experience in VRV project installations, but also with a better understanding of:

• the history of VRV technology and new improvements to the system;
• the primary advantages of Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems (DOAS);
• the benefits of a low dewpoint in typical K-12 classrooms; and
• the disadvantages of “normal” neutral air supply in school and work environments.
